Notes:
There seems to be a problem with her date of birth. Her headstone, in Manassas, Va. says Sept. 13, 1833 and the Combs Family Bible says July 14, 1834. As of this date I haven't been able to find out which one is correct. It's hard for me to believe that her family celebrated her birthday at the wrong time over the years, but the headstone may be a mistake as I have found many mistakes in the headstones of family in Manassas.
The "Manassas Journal", Manassas, Va. dated October 29, 1909
Died in Brentsville on Thursday, October 21, after a long and painful illness, Mrs. V. E. Bradshaw, in the 75th year of her age. The deceased was the only and accomplished daughter of William A.(sic. should be R.) and Sarah Wickliffe Combs. She was a lineal descendant of the Wickliffes of Virginia and Kentucky, and was a niece of William A. Wickliffe, who was twice governor of Kentucky, and postmaster-general under Buchanan. At the early age of 16 she married to Dr. Walter Hore, then a young surgeon in the United States army. Six children were the result of this marriage, only two of whom survive her - Mrs. Margaret Bowen and Mr. Walter W. Hore. Dr. Hore died suddenly of apoplexy in 1873, in the midst of a reception. Her second marriage was to Mr. T. S. Bradshaw.
She leaves only one son by this union, Mr. K. M. Bradshaw. The deceased was noted in her youth for her beauty, grace and charming conversational powers, and was one of the belles of ante-bellum days, but the crowning glory of her life was her charity. "She stretched forth her hand to the poor, yea, she reached forth her hands to the needy." Wherever sorrow, sickness or poverty cast its shadow, there she brought the sunshine of her love, sympathy and beneficance. In those days "that tried men's souls" she was to the wives, widows and orphans of the Confederacy an angel of mercy and love. In her last illness, when racked with pain, if a whisper of want or suffering reached her ears every effort in her power was made to alleviate it.
She passed away calmly and peacefully to Him who has said: "Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these My bretheren, ye have done it unto Me."
"The pilgrim they laid in a large upper chamber, whose window opened to the sun's rising. The name of the chamber was peace, and she slept until the break of day."
