      Meador, Joseph Family F552

The Meadors of Smith Co, Tennessee were descendants of Puritan and Quaker pioneers, who came from England about 1636 and settled on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. From there members of family moved mostly south and west until 1860. My family was in Smith Co Tennessee. In the Smith County census of 1840 there were several families of Meadors in Smith County. By 1850 (after the formation of Macon County in 1842) there was only one family listed by that name. The Joseph Meador family (my great-grandfather) consisted of Joseph Meador, 48 yrs old, his wife Nancy Jane Rhoads 37, children Western (Wesley) 19, Moses age 17, Mary Jo 15, Absolom (Abseda) 12, Albert A 1, Sarah F 5, and Ann Elizabeth 10 months old.

I have only a few records of most of the children or their descendeants but as was the story of so many families when the Civil War broke out, each man followed his own beliefs and conscience.

The elder son Wesley, joined the Confederacy Co E 22nd (Barteau's) Co , 2nd Tennessee Cavalary,. Barteau's cavalry was in....MISSING line....then...and Albert joined the Union Army Co T 9th KY inf on 9-15-1861. They served until November and December 1864. One story I remember was that on a march, one brother found a meat skin. Provisions being so short, he saved it until night when the soldeirs camped. He found his brother and together they toasted the meat skin over a fire and ate the dripping on bread. Such an example of brotherly love. Also on January 2, 1863, at the Battle of Murfeesboro the Confederate 28th Tennessee Inf captured the 9th Kentucky Inf Reg flag. My great grandfather Ridley Robert West was in the 28th Tennessee, so therefore my grandfather and my great grandfather fought on opposite sides in at least one battle of the war. After the war, they retruned to Smith County and resumed their lives. Albert married Mary Ann Mundy and is remembered by many elder residents of Smith County as a most compassionate and honorable man.

Uncle Albert and Aunt "Molly" were the grandparents of present Smith County residents Kenneth and Gordon Kirby and Mrs. Nettie Phillips and Mrs. Myrle Holland. Moses Alexander married Fannie Allen Pyron and became the parents of seven children. Three of the children died at an early age. Three of the remaining left Tennessee to live elsewhere.

Elmore married Lura Donoho and moved to Tucson Arizona. Robert moved to Winfield Kansas where he married Ida Orr. Henry Jefferson never married and traveled and worked all over the USA. He died in Galveston Texas in 1955.

My father William Alton, married Bessie West Massey and died in Smith County in 1928. During their marriage they lived in Texas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. He contracted tuberculosis and spent several months in the Woodman Sanitarium in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In those days there was no medication to treat the disease so the treamtnet was to collapse the affected lung by putting air into the plural cavity, with the help of Dr. Boze of Defeated who instered a needle in the correct place, my father continued to keep the lung collapsed until advised to discontinue the treatment. There were three children born to this union. Frances who mow lives in Denver Colorado, Virginia who lives in Galveston Texas and James who graduated from Carthage High School and now lives in Dibell Texas.

Bessie West Massey Meador is now 96 yras old and lives in Galveston, Texas. She reads the Carthage Courier every week and is still interested in Smith County.

The Meador Heritage Society meets every two years in Pipestorm West Virginia to keep a record of descendents and to study and honor our heritage.

      According to VPM:

      (6) Joel Meador Jr (Drew REv. Pension age 75 in Tennessee 1832)

Joel Meador Jr, the son of (5) Joel Meador of Franklin Co VA, was born in that area when it was a portion of Bedofrd County on the plantation of his father on Indian Run. Her served in the REvolutionary War, volunterring in the fall of 1779 into the company of CApt. Joseph Arter, Lt. John Smith and Ensign George Turnbrill. This company marched to Moon's Tavern in Prince Edward County where Joel served on guargd duty for three months under Col. Charles Lynch, then was dischard. In the fall of 1781, he served a few days over 10 months being drafter in Bedford Co VA, uner Capt. Nathanial Rice. On this tour hemarched to the Prince Edward courhouse, then 60-70 miles down the James River to meet a ship of ammunition. This was brought back in small craft to lighten the ship. On this tour, her served with his brother JOnas and Isham. Joel was discharge at Richmond VA.

No record has yet been found of his marriage, nor of the mae of his wife. The suggestion has been marde that Jeptha Moore Meador's middle name could have come from his mother, but there is no verification.

Joel was willed 200 acres of his father's plantation on Indian Creek in Franklin Co VA by the terms of the will, probated in 1804. Joel sold his land Oct 1, 1804 (Franklin Co Deed Book 5) to Wright Wright (a neighbor) for 300 pounds sterling and joined hte general migration of his brothers and sister to Smith Co TN, though the date as agiven in his pension affidavit is 1809. In Tennessee, he purchased 150 acres on Doctor Hollow, an east branch of Long Creek, from James Gwin for $350 (Smith Co Deed Book D page 18 Dec 4, 1810). Here he lived until his death. He left no will, and his final resting place has not been found.

IN her pension application (March 9, 1837) his widow states that she adn Joel lived for a time in Illinois (could this have been to take up some boungty land?--no records) and then returned to Tennessee. She said the grandchildren tore up the family Bible in ILllinois.

Joel filed for apension on Nov 26, 1832 application No W-7445. The results are unknown, but apparently the pension must have been granted in view of the several services cited.

From one Meador Researcher to another, Hello

As a fellow researcher and perhaps even family member, I am asking for any information about the Meador family you may have, and especially your branch of the tree.

Recent discoveries in my father's records disclosed the names of my great great grandparents Deaton Meadows (OR) B June 16, 1793, Franklin County, Virginia; died June 30, 1850 and Margaret---Meadow (OR) (b December 29, 1800, Virgina; died April 13, 1845) Since then, we have found Deaton was the son of Jobe (Job), the son of Joel (b 1728), They had a family of at least six. (1) an unknown daughter born 1821, (2) my great grandfather Mark W born 1822, (3) Henry born 1825; (4) W.P. born 1826, (5) Hyrum (Hyman) born 1827 and (6) Lydia born 1828, all born in Sumner County, Tennessee. The family left Tennessee in 1850, probably accompanied with Ephraim Meador, a brother, settling briefly in Marion Co (1830 US Census) and moving on to Wayne County in the Brush Creek region where they owned and operated a corn mill until Margaret and Deaton died. Although not located, it is presumed they are buried at Brush Creek.

It is known Mark W married twice. In 1843 to 1845, he married Sarah Dudley (b 1827 IL). they had two children (1) Margaret born 1846 and (2) Tom born 1848. IN 1850, as MEDERS, they were residing in Montgomery County IL. She died shortly after this Census taking and is presumed to be buried somehwere in MOntgomery County IL.Nothing more has been learned of Margaret; however, Tom had three daughters living in the Carlyle area in the teens Priscilla (Lacey), Bell (Reed) and Grace (Hardy). We know that sometime at 1854-55 Mark W married again and moved to the Xenia region. This wedding was with Delilah Meaders, probably a close cousin. Delilah was born in 1821 and died in 1881. She is buried in Wooley Cem, Iuka twp, Marion Co IL. This union produced three children. (1) Allen born in 1856 who had three children; Manuel died in Spanish American war, Ed, and June (Wiegle). It is known Allen reverted to Meadow spelling. (2) Mary Ann (Polly) born February 24, 1858 died November 30, 1926. She married a Tom???Tyler, and they had three children: Tom, who is probably the unnamed infant in the Wooley Cem, Toby who lived in the Centrailia area until his death in the 1960's and Leota who married a Mr. Phillips from Carlinville, IL. where they in turn had Mary Ann and Cranston. (3) My grandfather Mark Washington born Feb 22, 1863 died July 21, 1915; Shortly afterward, great granddad was involved in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was wounded at Resaca, Georgia May 13, 1864 and died June 7, 1864. He is buried at Resaca Georgia the end of his Voluntary US Army career in the IL 111ith Inf. Co C, which commenced September 18, 1862 at the call of his country.

Granddad Mark Washington married Francillo (Frances) Merrihew (b 11-18-1872, deid 7-18-1955) on March 16, 1899 at Xenia, IL. They had four children: (1) Henry Vernon b 4-5-1890 died 9-19-1907 buried at Carlyle IL; (2) Alva Virgil b 7-5-1894 died 8-9-1965, buried at Blackwell Oklahoma, my father; (3) Louis Leroy b 2-18-1897, died 12-16-1918 and (4) Ruby Christine (Lee) b 9-7-1905. She buried in Magnolia Arkansas.

      (1) Harry Vernon had no children. He died in a rail accident at the tender age of 18.

      (2) Alva Virgil enlised inteh US Army 6-12-1917, serving until 6-24-1919. He served overseas in France in the 359th Station hospital; taking part in the offensives of Meuse Argonne, St.Mihiel and chateau Thierry. He returned hom in 1919 and followed his intended brid to Augusta Kansas. Ruth Eunice Flanigam of Salem IL (b 2-6-1899 d 9-5-1980 buried at Blackwell Ok. They were married November 8, 1919 at Augusta Kansas. There are over sixty surviving, including myself Mark Richard Meador (b 10-23-1933). We have an annual reunion around Christmastime each year. In 1982 we hope to meet in Arkansas City, Kansas.

      93) Louis Leroy married Ida Young 5-6-1917, at Carlyle IL (Ida died 1-3-1934). Louis died of typhoid (12-16-1918). They had one son, Rolland Leroy b 8-24-1918 and died 7-21-1940. buried at Flora IL. Further, Rolland married Elizabeth Leota Raney. They were married May ??. 1938. Rolland visited the Bramen-Blackwell OK area winter 1939. He was killed 8 months later ina car wreck. Eleven days later Elizabeth had a son, Rolland Leroy (Jr) b 8-2-1940 died 9-27-1966, Rolland Jr's wife's name is not given before their deaths by gunshot wounds. They had Barbara Louise b 9-19-1960. Rollard III b 11-10-1961, Ronnie Lee b 9-26-1962, Theresa Marie b 1-15-1965 and Sheri Lynn b 5-13-1966. who was only four months old when her parents untimely deaths. Further infomration would be available from Mrs. Ruby Lee of Magnolia, Arkansas. Both dead now.

I will cooperate in any further information on my branch of the famil if you have mutual interest.

Note: Joel (1725), son of Jonas, Seems to be the nephew of Joshua/Joel (1702), son of John, who married Agnes Seay.

"Will of Joel Meador, 1774 Amelia County, VA, Virginia Will Book 2, Page 221 Probated May 1777...My will and desire ist hat my wife Agness (as spelled here) shall enjoy the rest of my estate during her natural life or widowhood...Witness my hand and seal this 23rd day of September 1774. Note: All resources indicate the Agnes Seay was born about 1713, but that doesn't compute wiht teh 1868 marriage date, age 55, if she then gave birth to four children with Joel Meador as indicated in his will. She must have been considerably younger than this.

My line is Joel Meadoar (Jonas Meador, JOhn, Thomas "Prphan", Thomas Meades, Fatehr) was born about 1729 in Cumberland Co VA. He died in 1798 in Franklin Co VA. Joel married (1) Susannah Clark, daugther of George Clark and Elizabeth on 25 Nov 1750 in Franklin Co VA. Susannah was born in 1730 in Essex Co VA. She died on 11 Feb 1818 in Franklin Coi VA, Joel also married (2) Mrs. Agnes Meador. Agnes was born about 1742 in VA.

Mary (Susannah) Meador was born in 1751/1758 and died before 1818 married John Heard. The Heard family has there as Susannah. The Meador family has her as Mary. What do know she is one of Joel children (as written).

I have both Heard and Meador of my webpage www.geocities.com/janet_arciu

According to an old book, found not to be exactly correct via VPM:

"Sixth Generation" Meador, Isham b 20 March 1762 Bedford Co VA died 2 March 1840 Smith Co Tenn, fL Meador, Joel Sr m: Clark, Susannah mar 25 March 1782 to Bradshaw, Biddy, Bedford Co VA

      Children:

      M. 1. John b 1785 Bedford co VA

      M. 2. William b 26 April 1786 Bedford Co VA

M.3. Eli b ca 1787 Bedford Co VA

      M. 4. Jessie b 1799 Franklin Co VA or Smith Co Tn

      M. 5. Ambrose

      M. 6. Deaton

      M. 7. Ephraim b 23 May 1787 Franklin Co VA

      M. 8. Peter

      F. 9. Elizabeth

Those born after Jesse are not in order of birth. It is probably that there were more children. Isham was a RW soldier, see page 7, the Meadaor Family.

Is is possible that Deaton and Ephraim came to Illinois, together and Deaton went to Wayne Co, IL in 1830
