  1. 1.  William Penn was born Abt 1544 (son of Margaret Rastall, son of William Penne); died 1588.

    Notes:

William Penn, son of William Penne of Minety and grandson of John Penne of the same place, was apprenticed as a law clerk to the counselor-at-law, Christopher George of Bawnton, near Cirencester, eventually becoming his chief clerk. He was married by 1570 to Margaret Rastall daughter of John Rastall Alderman of Gloucester and wife Anne George a sister to the above Christopher.

William and Margaret Penn apparently settled in Malmesbury four or five miles southwest of Minety. In the Malmesbury Subsidy Roll of 1570-71, 13 Elizabeth I, William was taxed six shillings on his movable goods and was taxed there again ten years later. According to Brigadier Hogg, he was not listed in the Subsidy Rolls for 1586-87, but in the Lay Subsidy Roll for Malmesbury borough in the Public Record Office is the entry for " William Penn goods iij li--iij d, as sited by Mr. Lea (note 7) It is apparent however, that William Penn was deceased by 1588, and that in 1590 his widow and six children were living with the Elder William Penne. PMHB, XIV, 291. This last entry is not cited by Brigadier Hogg.
